Department of Urology

The Department of Urology at Peking Union Medical College Hospital was established in the 1940s. In the 1950s, pioneering medical figures such as Yu Songting, Wu Jieping, and Shi Xien developed it into a specialized department of considerable scale. From the 1960s to the 1980s, experts like Liu Guozhen, Wu Decheng, and Xia Mofu further advanced it into a nationally renowned urology specialty. Motivated by the hospital's motto of 'rigor, precision, diligence, and dedication,' the department has evolved over decades into a top-tier institution specializing in adrenal surgery, minimally invasive urology, kidney transplantation, urological male reproductive tumors, urinary stones, general urology, and andrology.

The department currently has three wards with a total of 110 beds (92 in general wards and 18 in special wards). It is equipped with advanced and comprehensive diagnostic, laboratory, and treatment facilities, capable of performing various clinical examinations and treatments. In addition to multiple laparoscopic surgical devices, 3D laparoscopic equipment, robotic laparoscopic surgical systems, and integrated imaging operating rooms, it possesses top-tier cystoscopy imaging equipment, rigid and flexible ureteroscopes, percutaneous nephroscopes, 2um and 1.9um lasers, holmium lasers, EMS lithotripters, extracorporeal shock wave lithotripters, ultrasound diagnostic devices, imaging urodynamic diagnostic devices, prostate cancer brachytherapy devices, sexual function diagnostic devices, biofeedback therapy devices, and advanced endourological diagnostic and treatment equipment. The department admits over 4,000 inpatients annually, performing approximately 3,900 surgeries, with complex and challenging surgeries accounting for about one-third. The outpatient volume exceeds 120,000 visits per year, with 4,500 outpatient surgeries (including cystoscopy). To facilitate patient care, the outpatient department includes subspecialty clinics for andrology, stones, tumors, and adrenal surgery.

The department currently has 35 physicians, 32 nurses, and 3 technicians. Among them are 9 chief physicians, 10 associate chief physicians, 12 attending physicians, 3 resident physicians, and 10 graduate students. The department includes a standing committee member of the Urology Branch of the Chinese Medical Association, a vice-chairman of the Urology Branch of the Beijing Medical Association, a vice-president of the Andrology Physician Branch of the Chinese Physician Association, a president of the Andrology Physician Branch of the Beijing Physician Association, a chairman of the Urology Expert Committee of the Beijing Medical Award Foundation, a vice-chairman of the Urological Oncology Professional Committee of the Beijing Oncology Society, and several other committee members; one editorial board member of the Chinese Journal of Urology, one editorial board member of the Chinese Journal of Surgery, one deputy editor of the Chinese Journal of Andrology, and editorial board members of several other professional journals.

The department undertakes the urology teaching responsibilities for Peking Union Medical College and serves as a standardized training base for resident physicians in Beijing, as well as a clinical postdoctoral research station, having trained numerous outstanding resident physicians and postdoctoral fellows. As a training base for grassroots medical institutions nationwide, it receives urology physicians from across the country for short-term training in rational drug use (LEAP) each year. It is one of the earliest authorized doctoral degree-granting points for urology by the State Council Academic Degrees Committee, currently having 6 doctoral supervisors and 5 master's supervisors. In recent years, it has trained over 30 doctoral and master's students. The department enrolls 6-8 doctoral and master's degree students annually and currently has 10 in-service graduate students.

As a clinical key specialty of the Ministry of Health, the department hosts multiple national conferences each year. It has received one Ministry of Health Science and Technology Progress Award, one Chinese Medical Science and Technology Award, one Huaxia Medical Award, and over 20 awards for research and medical achievements from educational institutions, along with a national Science and Technology Progress Award in collaboration with other departments. It has multiple research projects funded by the National Natural Science Foundation and others. The department emphasizes academic standards, encourages research design and publication of academic papers, and publishes over thirty articles in domestic core journals and SCI journals annually. It has obtained 5 national invention patents.

On February 22, 2017, Liu Yandong, a member of the Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee and Vice Premier of the State Council, visited Peking Union Medical College Hospital for research. Vice Premier Liu Yandong, along with Li Bin, Director of the National Health and Family Planning Commission, visited the urology ward, where Liu Yandong learned in detail about the hospital's medical services, quality management, cost control, and cultural construction, fully affirming the hospital's philosophy of 'treating patients like family and treating colleagues like kin' and recognizing the hospital's experiences in medical services, quality safety management, medical research, talent cultivation, medical support, and rational drug use.

Currently, the Department of Urology is a vibrant, united, and proactive team that has shown remarkable development momentum in recent years. The hospital will continue to expand its advantageous projects, innovate within the framework of overall hospital development, continuously improve medical technology and service quality, promote clinical and basic research in urology, and cultivate more professional talents, making significant contributions to the medical field in China.
