Department of Neurosurgery

Led by Professors Wang Renzhi and Ma Wenbin, internationally renowned for endoscopic transnasal minimally invasive pituitary surgery

HERITAGE & OVERVIEW

Department Overview & Heritage

The Department of Neurosurgery at Peking Union Medical College Hospital has a long history and is one of the earliest departments to engage in neurosurgery in China. As early as the 1930s, pioneers in Chinese neurosurgery, Professors Guan Songtao and Zhao Yicheng, conducted the first brain tumor surgeries at Peking Union Medical College Hospital. Subsequently, renowned neurosurgeons such as Professors Feng Chuanyi, Wang Weijun, and Yin Zhaoyan made significant contributions to the development and expansion of the neurosurgery department at Peking Union Medical College Hospital, actively promoting the advancement of neurosurgery in China.

Currently, the Department of Neurosurgery at Peking Union Medical College Hospital is divided into specialized groups focusing on sellar tumors, malignant tumors, spinal cord and spine, functional neurosurgery, skull base tumors, and acute critical care. The pituitary adenoma group is a specialty group that has performed over 8,000 pituitary adenoma surgeries, achieving treatment outcomes that are internationally advanced and domestically leading. Based on the overall advantages of the department and its excellent diagnostic and therapeutic results, the Pituitary Tumor Neurosurgery Treatment Center was established in 2002.

08Cranial trauma and acute critical care for intracerebral hemorrhage

EXCELLENCE IN CARE

Clinical Strengths & Advanced Capabilities

Routine use of endoscopic transsphenoidal minimally invasive approaches, multimodal neuro-navigation, intraoperative MRI, and intraoperative neurophysiological monitoring, fully balancing complete tumor resection with the preservation of neurological function.

1

Endoscopic transnasal minimally invasive resection of complex invasive pituitary adenomas, sellar meningiomas, and craniopharyngiomas, with minimal trauma and clear surgical field

2

Maximal safe resection of gliomas in functional areas under awake anesthesia combined with intraoperative neurophysiological monitoring

3

Minimally invasive precise surgical approach design for skull base tumors guided by multimodal imaging fusion technology (MRI + PET + DTI)

4

Integrated management of gliomas based on molecular pathological typing, including surgery, temozolomide chemotherapy, radiotherapy, and tumor treating fields (TTFields)

5

Minimally invasive decompression of the posterior cranial fossa and atlantoaxial stabilization and fusion for cranio-cervical junction anomalies
