Designated a national guiding center for complex and severe diseases, PUMCH leads China's national rare disease diagnosis and treatment network. In 2021, it was approved for national medical center development and the public hospital high-quality development pilot. A national key laboratory supports complex and rare disease research.
Founded by the Rockefeller Foundation in 1921 with the ambition to become Asia's finest medical center, PUMCH nurtured generations of physicians, including Zhang Xiaoqian and Lin Qiaozhi. Its teaching tradition joins basic theory, knowledge and skills with rigorous standards. Professors, case records and the library are its celebrated 'three treasures'; medical education and residency training remain central to its national role.
