HERITAGE & OVERVIEW
The Department of Interventional Radiology offers outpatient services, with physicians available Monday to Friday. Outpatients should register and consult based on imaging examination data and necessary blood tests, and can schedule procedures such as percutaneous biopsy, drainage, and nephrostomy.
Other interventional procedures generally require hospitalization; patients can visit the relevant specialty department for consultation and hospitalization, and then arrange for examination and treatment with the Department of Interventional Radiology, which can also assist in contacting the ICU or emergency observation ward.
Before interventional procedures, the operator or an assistant will discuss with the patient's family. The main topics include: the patient's condition, the necessity of interventional treatment, the surgical method, possible complications, and if necessary, the potential costs and the family's financial capacity. The 'Informed Consent for Interventional Treatment' and 'Self-Payment Agreement' will be signed.
Emergency interventional treatment workflow
Currently, the emergency conditions treated by the Department of Interventional Radiology at Peking Union Medical College Hospital mainly include:
A. Various acute massive hemorrhages, including epistaxis, alveolar hemorrhage, massive hemoptysis, gastrointestinal hemorrhage, obstetric hemorrhage, postoperative hemorrhage, and traumatic hemorrhage.
B. Acute cholecystitis, acute suppurative cholangitis, acute obstructive hydronephrosis.
C. Acute venous thromboembolism.
D. Acute cerebral ischemia, subarachnoid hemorrhage.
For the above cases, patients should visit the emergency department. After emergency treatment and necessary imaging and laboratory tests, the emergency physician will contact the on-call interventional radiologist for consultation. If the patient meets the criteria for emergency interventional treatment, the interventional radiology physician will notify the interventional operating room staff to prepare for the procedure and await the patient. The operator or an assistant will discuss with the patient's family, covering the patient's condition, the necessity of emergency interventional treatment, the surgical method, possible complications, and if necessary, the potential costs and the family's financial capacity. The 'Informed Consent for Interventional Treatment' will be signed.

The Department of Interventional Radiology at Peking Union Medical College Hospital is one of the earliest top centers in China to perform vascular and non-vascular minimally invasive interventional procedures.
