Department of Endocrinology

The Department of Endocrinology at Peking Union Medical College Hospital was officially established in 1961 under the leadership of renowned endocrinologist Professor Liu Shihao. In 1978, it became an independent department. In 1981, it was designated as a doctoral program by the Ministry of Education. In 1988, it was approved as a key laboratory for endocrinology by the Ministry of Health. The department is a national key discipline. It has inherited and developed the endocrinology career initiated by Professor Liu Shihao, emphasizing clinical, educational, and research work. It maintains a comprehensive research direction, making it the most complete and comprehensive department in the field of endocrinology in the country.

Research directions include pituitary diseases, thyroid diseases, diabetes, parathyroid diseases, bone diseases, adrenal diseases, and gonadal diseases. Research encompasses epidemiology, clinical medicine, and basic medicine at all levels. The academic level of the endocrinology department at Peking Union Medical College Hospital has always been at the forefront in the country, with Professor Shi Yifan being an academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering in the field of endocrinology. Since the merger and restructuring of the East and West hospitals in 2002, the department has further strengthened and expanded. Currently, there are 81 staff members, including 1 academician, 7 professors, 7 associate professors, 18 attending physicians, 5 resident physicians; 1 researcher, 4 associate researchers, 8 chief technicians, 2 technicians, 1 mid-level management staff, 9 chief nurses, and 18 nurses. A large number of endocrinology professionals have been trained through clinical and research activities. More than 60 master's graduates and over 30 doctoral graduates have become the backbone of endocrinology research.

The department places great emphasis on clinical and clinical research work, consistently maintaining a leading position in this field nationwide. Currently, there is one endocrinology outpatient clinic and two inpatient wards at both the East and West hospitals, with a total of 66 beds. The outpatient services are divided into a general endocrinology clinic in the morning and a specialized clinic in the afternoon, treating over 300 patients daily. The specialized clinics include diabetes, thyroid, adrenal, metabolic bone diseases, pituitary, and gonadal diseases, directly serving clinical research. The endocrinology wards primarily admit critically ill patients and those with complex diagnoses, while the functional testing room conducts various endocrine function tests, such as stimulation or suppression tests. In 2002, the Peking Union Medical College Hospital established four medical centers: the Pituitary Disease Diagnosis and Treatment Center, the Diabetes Center, the Obesity Disease Diagnosis and Treatment Center, and the Bone Metabolism Disease Diagnosis and Treatment Center, which also play significant roles in clinical, educational, and research work.

The endocrinology department publishes over 50 papers annually in national and other journals, and has hosted or participated in numerous projects funded by the National Natural Science Foundation, the National 863 Program, and various municipal and institutional projects. It has received the National Science and Technology Progress Award once (first prize) and twice (second prize), and has also won multiple awards from the Ministry of Health for scientific and technological progress, playing an important role in promoting the development and advancement of endocrinology in China. The endocrinology department has consistently participated in leadership roles within the Chinese Endocrinology Society and the Diabetes Society, as well as the Beijing Endocrinology Society and Diabetes Society.
