HERITAGE & OVERVIEW
The Department of Infectious Diseases at Peking Union Medical College Hospital is one of the earliest established departments, led by a legacy of early infectious disease experts. Past directors, including Li Bangqi, Wang Aixia, Sheng Ruiyuan, Deng Guohua, and Li Taisheng, have played significant roles in the prevention and control of infectious diseases in China. The department has been instrumental in the diagnosis and management of infectious diseases, particularly during various historical periods. Currently, the department has become a national-level center for the medical treatment, research, prevention, and training of infectious diseases. It is a doctoral degree-granting institution for infectious diseases, a key clinical discipline recognized by the Ministry of Health, a national continuing education base for infectious diseases, a national clinical trial base for infectious disease drugs, and a national training base for comprehensive prevention and control of HIV/AIDS. It ranks seventh in the best specialty reputation list by the Fudan University Hospital Management Institute. As a leader in HIV/AIDS treatment in China, Peking Union Medical College Hospital has faced challenges during periods of antiviral drug shortages and significant side effects, establishing multiple clinical research initiatives such as the '15th Five-Year Plan', '11th Five-Year Plan', and '12th Five-Year Plan' that lead the national field of HIV/AIDS. In the new era, the department is at the forefront of multi-organ function research in HIV/AIDS, leveraging the multidisciplinary advantages of a comprehensive hospital to establish a distinctive collaborative model known as the 'PUMCH Comprehensive Model'. The department currently has 42 staff members, including 5 senior titles and 5 associate senior titles. It holds multiple important positions in national and Beijing academic societies, with one former chair (Chinese Medical Association Tropical Disease and Parasitology Branch), two incoming chairs (Chinese Medical Association Infectious Diseases Branch, Chinese Medical Association Clinical Epidemiology Branch, and Evidence-Based Medicine Branch), and two vice-chairs (Chinese Medical Association Tropical Diseases and Parasitology Branch, China Hospital Association Hospital Infection Professional Committee); in Beijing societies, there is one chair (Beijing Medical Association Clinical Epidemiology Branch) and three vice-chairs (two in the Beijing Medical Association Infectious Diseases Branch, one in the Beijing Pharmacology Society Antimicrobial Branch). Additionally, several members and young members hold positions in national and Beijing medical associations, enjoying a high reputation in the field of infectious diseases.
