The Department of Medical Oncology at Peking Union Medical College Hospital is a clinical key specialty construction project of the National Health and Family Planning Commission. It currently has 2 professors, 5 associate professors, 10 attending physicians, and 2 researchers. Among the 17 doctors, there are 12 PhDs and 5 Masters, forming a balanced talent team.
The department is currently dedicated to the diagnosis and comprehensive treatment of various solid tumors, including breast cancer, lung cancer, lymphoma, gastrointestinal (esophagus, stomach, colorectal, pancreas, liver and bile duct) tumors, urogenital (kidney, ureter, bladder, prostate) tumors, neuroendocrine tumors, head and neck tumors, soft tissue tumors, thyroid cancer, and melanoma, offering chemotherapy, hyperthermic intraperitoneal chemotherapy, molecular targeted therapy, and immunotherapy. It has accumulated unique experience in treating complex and difficult cases such as rare tumors, geriatric tumors, and tumors with comorbidities. The department organizes and participates in multidisciplinary collaborative groups (MDT) for pancreatic, gastrointestinal, thoracic, intracranial germ cell, head and neck, and urological tumors. The annual outpatient volume is 32,000 visits, with over 5,000 inpatient admissions. The department also undertakes national and municipal medical tasks such as high-ranking health care and support for border areas.
The Department of Medical Oncology is a pioneer in advocating the concept of 'standardized cancer treatment' in China, adhering to advanced treatment philosophies such as 'personalized treatment,' 'multidisciplinary collaboration,' and 'precision cancer therapy' in clinical practice. The department has a strong academic atmosphere, holding weekly discussions on new and difficult cases, and annually organizing national continuing education courses and neuroendocrine tumor workshops. It participates in international oncology academic conferences such as ASCO, ESMO, and JSMO to stay updated on the latest advancements in cancer treatment. The department is staffed with highly qualified personnel, most of whom have overseas study experience, and has established academic connections with world-class cancer research institutions such as MD Anderson, NYP, UCLA, UCSF, the Cancer Institute Hospital of Japanese Foundation for Cancer Research, and the National Cancer Center Japan, inviting internationally renowned scholars for exchanges annually.
The department currently has 1 doctoral supervisor and 2 master's supervisors, training 2-3 graduate students annually. It has a tumor basic research laboratory and collaborates with the National Key Laboratory of Molecular Biology of the Chinese Academy of Medical Sciences to conduct research in cell biology, molecular biology, and tumor immunology. It is currently a 'National Clinical Trial Base for Cancer Drugs,' conducting an average of over 20 I-IV phase clinical trials annually. The department has undertaken or participated in multiple national and ministerial research projects such as the '11th Five-Year Plan,' '863 Program,' and the National Natural Science Foundation. It also provides education for undergraduate and graduate students from Peking Union Medical College and conducts ongoing training for physicians. The department's ward has been recognized as a 'Beijing Demonstration Ward for Cancer Pain' and also undertakes national and municipal training tasks for oncology nursing.
