Department of Plastic & Reconstructive Surgery

The Department of Plastic Surgery at Peking Union Medical College Hospital was established in 1952 under the leadership of Professor Song Ruyiao, one of the founders of plastic surgery in China. In 1957, the department separated from the hospital, undergoing expansion, relocation, and dissolution. In the late 1960s, the department was reinstated at Peking Union Medical College Hospital, still led by Professor Song Ruyiao. In 1979, it separated again from the hospital and was expanded into a dedicated plastic surgery hospital. To align with international standards and enhance comprehensive capabilities, the department was reinstated in 2003. It is currently a key specialty unit for plastic surgery recognized by the Chinese Medical Association and the Chinese Rehabilitation Medicine Association. Under the leadership of renowned experts such as Professor Wang Xiaojun, the department inherits the excellent traditions of the founding figures like Professor Song Ruyiao, forming top domestic technical features in minimally invasive plastic surgery, breast reconstruction, and complex wound repair.

Since its establishment in 1952, the Department of Plastic Surgery at Peking Union Medical College Hospital has continuously developed into a leading center with comprehensive disciplines, integrating medical care, education, and research. It boasts strong talent, equipment, and multidisciplinary collaboration advantages, maintaining extensive and close connections and collaborations with the domestic and international plastic surgery community. It is a degree-granting institution for Master's and Doctoral programs in plastic surgery at Peking Union Medical College, currently having 7 doctoral and master's supervisors, 17 medical doctors, 2 master's degree holders, and over 10 doctoral and master's graduate students.
