The Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology at Peking Union Medical College (PUMCH) is designated as the Lin Qiaozhi Obstetrics and Gynecology Research Center by the Ministry of Health, a national key discipline, a national center for the diagnosis and treatment of complex obstetric and gynecological diseases, a doctoral degree granting point by the Ministry of Education, a postdoctoral mobile station in obstetrics and gynecology, a training base for obstetrics and gynecology residents, a research base for obstetric drugs by the National Medical Products Administration, and a national continuing education base in obstetrics and gynecology. The department is staffed with numerous talented professionals, has a complete team structure, comprehensive specialties, balanced discipline development, well-equipped laboratories, and distinctive teaching characteristics, holding a unique position and role.

1. Basic introduction of the department: The obstetrics and gynecology specialties at PUMCH include obstetrics, routine gynecology, gynecologic oncology, reproductive endocrinology, family planning, and trophoblastic disease. Each specialty group is led by a professor and includes experienced renowned experts as consultants; they have developed their unique characteristics and clear research directions, achieving notable contributions. The national research center has been a World Health Organization (WHO) Collaborating Center for Human Reproduction since 1994, designated as the Lin Qiaozhi Obstetrics and Gynecology Research Center by the Ministry of Health in 2001, appointed as the National Prenatal Diagnosis Center in 2003, and became the National Clinical Research Center for Obstetric and Gynecological Diseases in 2014. Currently, this discipline is part of the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology at Peking Union Medical College, the Ministry of Health's clinical trial base for new drugs in obstetrics and gynecology, and the only national continuing education base for obstetrics and gynecology.

The department has established a women's health center, diagnosing and treating numerous patients with ovarian dysfunction, menstrual abnormalities, reproductive dysfunction, perimenopausal diseases, and sexual development disorders. It has developed more effective and reasonable clinical ovulation induction protocols, continuously improving success rates, with annual in vitro fertilization pregnancy rates steadily increasing; it has implemented blastocyst culture techniques and embryo vitrification preservation technologies; improved surgical treatments for infertility and sexual development disorders; and conducted multiple multicenter clinical trials for new drugs.

The department gradually expanded the scope of family planning surgeries, including laparoscopic procedures for ectopic pregnancy, removal of misplaced IUDs, adnexectomy, and total hysterectomy; hysteroscopic surgeries for foreign body removal, residual IUDs, polyps, and submucosal fibroid resection; medical and surgical abortions, IUD insertion and removal, subdermal implant placement and removal, and tubal sterilization (both open and laparoscopic), conducting research to promote clinical treatment development based on practical situations.

The department has undertaken and completed the national '15th Science and Technology Key Project' on the application of network technology in obstetrics and gynecology education. It established the PUMCH Obstetrics and Gynecology Education Network (WWW.PUMCH-OBGYN) in 2005, receiving honors such as 'Peking Union Medical College Level Excellent Course' (2007), 'National Bilingual Teaching Demonstration Course' (2008), 'Beijing Excellent Course (Obstetrics and Gynecology)' (2009), and 'National Excellent Course (Obstetrics and Gynecology)' (2009).

As a national continuing education base, the department plays an important role in promoting and applying new advancements and technologies in routine gynecology, gynecologic oncology, gynecological endocrinology, urogynecology, prenatal diagnosis, and obstetric life support. The base is staffed with many highly renowned experts, many of whom are key figures in the Obstetrics and Gynecology Branch of the Chinese Medical Association, co-organizing numerous continuing education activities with significant impact and broad coverage, offering in-person training and intensive short-term training sessions attended by participants from hospitals at all levels across various provinces and cities, effectively disseminating new technologies and achieving good results. The department emphasizes the promotion of standardized treatments, new technologies, and training in sub-specialty knowledge, which is beneficial for the development of sub-specialties and the cultivation of discipline leaders in various regions. The annual 'China Resources Conference' has become a brand, balancing lectures and surgeries, with publications and recordings produced, attracting thousands of participants each session. From 2007 to 2010, nearly 300 continuing education projects were held, reaching over 25,000 attendees. Each year, 40 to 60 residents are recruited for training, with regular seminars for residents, many of whom return to their hospitals as key personnel and discipline leaders.

The department places great importance on the training of residents and attending physicians, encouraging young scholars to apply for research projects, publish articles, and engage in more work, writing, attending conferences, and publishing, which has enhanced the overall quality of physicians. A monthly reporting system is maintained: each chief resident reports on the previous month's work, highlighting key challenges and reviewing literature on special cases; experts and professors from each specialty group discuss difficult cases. Teaching monthly reports are conducted: the teaching secretary summarizes the previous month's teaching activities, notifies the focus of the upcoming month's teaching work, collects student feedback on teaching, and summarizes the number of small lectures conducted by each specialty group each month. A business learning system is adhered to: every one to two months, each specialty group hosts sessions on topics related to clinical needs, with subsequent research promoting scientific work.
